Walter Mondale was a Minnesota senator and the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee in 1984. He served as Jimmy Carter’s Vice President from 1977 to 1981. From 1993 to 1996, he was also the US Ambassador to Japan.
From 1955 to 2014, he was married to Joan Mondale, with whom he had two sons, William and Ted Mondale, and a daughter, Eleanor Mondale. His half-brother, Lester Mondale, was a Unitarian minister.
